In The Favourite Daughter, we are again presented with an unreliable narrator in Jane, a device that Rouda employs with finesse. In 2017, I read Kaira Rouda’s novel, Best Day Ever and I was taken aback by the strength of her unreliable narrator and central protagonist of the novel, Paul. I was reminded just how much I enjoyed Kaira Rouda’s writing style and narrative direction when I selected The Favourite Daughter to review. The Favourite Daughter is an explosive thrill ride, presenting the reader with some unthinkable situations, as they try to wade through the details and uncover the real Jane Harris, a slippery woman who proves to be very hard to understand. The illusion of a happy home, a happy family and a perfect life, created by Jane Harris, Kaira Rouda’s lead protagonist in The Favourite Daughter, is actually something much more convoluted and sinister. But you never know how far someone will go to keep a family together… Review: The bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives should never be broken. What really happened on the day that Mary died? And who is lying to whom in this family? And Jane receives a note warning her that Mary’s death wasn’t an accident. Her daughter Betsy seems distant, even secretive. Her husband has been working long days – and nights – at the office. Lost in a haze of antidepressants, she’s barely even left the house…until now.Īs Jane reemerges into the world, it’s clear she’s missed a lot in the last year. But exactly one year ago, Jane’s eldest daughter, Mary, died in a tragic accident, and Jane has been grief-stricken ever since. It’s a place that seems too beautiful to be touched by sadness. Jane Harris lives in a sparkling home in an oceanfront gated community in Orange County. Genres: Fiction, Contemporary, Psychological, Thriller, Suspense
